"Dari Mimbar ke Hati" (From Minbar to Hearts): Tailored Workshop for Imams in Singapore
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
In 2024, our team designed and conducted an innovative workshop titled "Dari Mimbar ke Hati" (From Minbar to Hearts) after being engaged by Muis Academy, aimed at enhancing the delivery skills of imams in Singapore. At the heart of this programme lies a universal principle: the importance of meaning what you say and saying what you mean. Whilst this concept is crucial in all forms of communication, we tailored it specifically for imams delivering khutbahs, recognising the profound impact their words have on their congregations.

This intensive programme consisted of two 4-hour sessions, each accommodating 30-40 participants, allowing us to reach a broader group of imams. Led by our Director, a seasoned veteran in broadcast media with extensive experience in radio, television, and high-profile events such as the National Day Parade Malay language commentary, the workshop addressed a unique challenge faced by Singapore's imams. Whilst all imams in Singapore receive pre-written khutbah scripts to ensure consistency across mosques, the workshop aimed to help them personalise and internalise these messages, enabling more heartfelt and impactful delivery.
Key Highlights
Key areas covered in the workshop included:
-
Voice modulation techniques and pacing strategies to captivate the congregation
-
Skilful use of gestures and body language to reinforce the message
-
Techniques for engaging the audience and maintaining their attention
-
Methods for internalising the khutbah content and delivering it with genuine conviction
By focusing on these crucial aspects, "Dari Mimbar ke Hati" equipped imams with the tools to transform pre-written scripts into powerful, personalised sermons. The workshop aimed to bridge the gap between the written word and spoken delivery, enabling imams to convey religious teachings with greater impact and resonance.
This initiative not only enhances the spiritual experience for mosque-goers but also supports the professional development of imams, reinforcing their crucial role in Singapore's Muslim community. Through this workshop, we contributed to the ongoing efforts to nurture effective religious leadership and foster meaningful spiritual connections in Singapore's diverse Islamic landscape.
